Large explosion onboard USS Bismarck Sea (CVE-95), following kamikaze hit. Pensacola remained in the Pacific for the rest of the war and was sunk as a target in August 1948 off the coast of Washington state. Providing support off Iwo Jima on February 17, 1945, she was hit by Japanese coastal guns and received some damage, which was quickly repaired. Escorting carriers and warships that participated at the Battle of Midway and during the Gudalcanal Campaign, Pensacola made her way across the Pacific with the subsequent successful campaigns. Pensacola was commissioned in February 1930, and was assigned to the South Pacific when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Three-hundred and eighteen of her gallant crew were lost. Whilst serving off Iwo Jima on February 21, she was hit by a Kamikaze abeam of the after elevator.

Bismarck Sea was commissioned on May 20, 1944, and served off the Philippines that November, later supporting the invasion of Luzon in January 1945. Two ships shown are USS Bismarck Sea (CVE-95) and USS Pensacola (CA-24). Navy ships that were damaged or lost during the preparation for landing and at the Battle for Iwo Jima, February-March 1945.
